How LASIK Works

A lot of people have questions about LASIK surgery.  It may seem like a very mysterious process.  In fact, LASIK is a short and easy procedure that leaves you with clear vision and no need to bother with glasses or contact ever again!

The acronym LASIK stands for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.  This type of eye surgery is the most popular and successful vision correction procedure in the world. It is a permanent procedure used to improve a person’s vision quality and eliminate his or her dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK is a fast, outpatient procedure performed while you are awake and lying flat on a surgical laserbed. At LASIKPro, before the procedure begins you will be offered a mild sedative and special anesthetic drops will be added to numb the eyes and ensure comfort.

There are three steps to the LASIK process:

Step 1: Your eye will be gently immobilized so there will be no movement during the procedure. Next, a very thin flap is created to expose the underlying cornea, and is carefully lifted like the page of a book.

Step 2: Using a cool-beam excimer laser that has been individually programmed and double-verified with your exact eye measurements and an electronic mapping of your eye, your cornea is reshaped to optimize vision.

Step 3: The flap is then replaced, and immediately begins healing itself! The entire procedure can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Don't let the talk of lasers scare you, Meta-analysis done in March 2008 by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery revealed a 95.4 percent patient satisfaction rate among LASIK patients worldwide.  Think about it, if you only buy a new pair of glasses every other year, you're likely to spend $200 on a decent pair of glasses. If you do that from age 15 to 55, you will have spent $4,000!

At The LASIKPro Laser Eye Center we treat you like family.  You can trust us to make you see 20/20- or even better- 20/Happy.
